Brief History

Arabic Language Education Department established in 2011, it is one of the latest programs in UMY. The establishment background of this department was the actual reality of the lack of teachers in education field compared to the need of teachers in a certain study program, including Arabic language. Beside, Arabic Language has been one of the main subjects in some elementary schools and high schools. The need of Arabic Language teachers became urgent since Arabic Language Education Department was not exist in Yogyakarta. The Ministry of Education and Culture then opened Arabic Language Education Department to create competence Arabic Language teachers and to fulfill the need of Arabic Language teachers. There was only one university in Yogyakarta that opened Arabic Language Education Department which was Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta under The Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Based on these consideration, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta believed that organizing Arabic Language Education Department is a relevant decision to government program to fulfill the need of Arabic Language teachers. [1]
